Adult Calorie Needs Calculator

Estimate the energy intake associated with maintaining current weight using the 2023 National Academies adult Estimated Energy Requirement equations. The result shows the selected equation and every activity assumption.

Planning estimate for weight-stable adults age 19 or older; not a diet prescription or medical advice. Do not use this adult equation for children, teens, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Those life stages use separate energy equations and professional guidance may be appropriate.

How this estimate works

  1. The calculator selects one of the eight 2023 DRI adult EER equations using the sex and physical activity category entered.
  2. That equation combines age in years, height in centimeters, and weight in kilograms to estimate daily energy needed for weight maintenance.
  3. The result is rounded to the nearest 10 kcal/day and displays the exact coefficients and selected activity assumption.

Primary and official health sources

The National Academies report provides separate equations for pregnancy, lactation, and people under 19. NIDDK likewise limits its adult planning tool and advises consulting a health professional for personal medical questions.
